The Dholera SIR Project Site
Why Is Dholera The Ideal Project Site
Cities are available and flourish because they offer various amenities to its residents, migrants and also because their existence brings about many positive ripple effects on the economy. That’s one of the main reasons why the process of urbanization is associated with financial growth.
The Dholera Special Investment Region or DSIR is one such urbanization attempt to create a region that fosters economic growth and provides gainful employment to many.
This ambitious SIR project is the very first under the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Project that has been undertaken by India and Japan and would be the ideal prototype for other such initiatives in future.
But why Dholera, you may ask?
Well, the location benefits of this region give it a distinct advantage to start with. It used to be a thriving port and is proximal to the cities of Bhavnagar, Ahmedabad and Baroda. It has sufficient land that can be acquired without much hassle. Environmental clearances have also been acquired and work with regard to the central road as well as airport have started in right earnest. Land of more than 300 sq kms have already been acquired.
The development is being planned to mirror the Punggol city in Singapore. It will be self sustaining and will have industrial parks, manufacturing zones, townships, entertainment areas and a population of close to 2 million by the year 2040.
Dholera has other advantages as well. Its strategic location makes it easy to access it via both metro rail as well as a central expressway. It is close to the Gujarat International Finance TechCity and also close to the Petroleum Investment Region.
The reason for looking at Dholera also stems from the saturation levels reached by cities in South India with regard to IT. Both electronic as well as IT companies are now looking beyond the South of India into cities like Chandigarh and Ahmedabad. Dholera fits the bill adequately, thanks to its proximity to Ahmedabad and the scope for development. The State too is keen to introduce policies that will harness the IT talent and enable people to find productive employment without them having to go out of their State.
Major companies such as HCC, hotmail co founder Sabeer Bhatia, DMICDC and Universal Success Enterprise have made ambitious plans to develop the Dholera SIR. The Nano City planned by Sabeer Bhatia for instance would entail an investment of over 30,000 crores and is confident he would be able to do without drinking water from Kalpasar. Solar energy would be used extensively to power up Dholera and that is expected to save fuel costs as well as keep the area green.
While Mumbai and Delhi are the end to end cities of the ambitious corridor plan, the States of Gujarat and Rajasthan would benefit the most since more than 35% of the land stretches in each of these States would see the development.
By taking proactive steps in identifying Dholera as the Special Investment Region, Gujarat has taken huge steps to take full advantage of the Mumbai – Delhi Corridor program.
